    Controller / Chief Accounting Officer
    Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
    Location: Boulder–Denver, CO corridor (HQ)

    BSG has commenced an executive search for a Controller / Chief Accounting Officer for our client, a rapidly scaling clean-energy technology company delivering long-duration energy storage solutions for the global power grid. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller / Chief Accounting Officer will own the build-out of a public-company–ready accounting and reporting function as the organization scales projects, capital deployment, and headcount in North America and beyond. The role is central to capital markets preparation, project execution, and maintaining financial integrity in a complex, capital-intensive environment.

    CONTROLLER / CHIEF ACCOUNTING OFFICER

    THE COMPANY

    Our client is a high-growth, clean-energy technology company focused on delivering long-duration energy storage solutions that make renewable power reliable, dispatchable, and cost-effective at scale. The company’s proprietary storage systems are designed to solve the intermittency of solar and wind generation, enabling utilities, independent power producers, and large energy users to decarbonize while maintaining grid stability and resilience. Its mission is to unlock the full value of renewable energy by pairing innovative storage technology with bankable, infrastructure-grade project execution and financing structures. The company is backed by leading climate-tech investors, corporate strategic partners, and impact-focused capital with a shared goal of accelerating the global energy transition.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Full Accounting & Reporting Ownership

    • Own 100% of all accounting, close, reporting, and technical accounting functions.
    • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes under U.S. GAAP.
    • Produce SEC-ready financial statements and disclosures (10-Q, 10-K, 8-K support).
    • Establish and maintain SOX-compliant internal controls.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors, advisors, and regulators.

    Public Company & Capital Markets Readiness

    • Lead accounting readiness for IPO or operate within an existing public-company environment.
    • Partner with the CFO on accounting policy, technical memos, and disclosure strategy.
    • Support complex capital structures including equity, debt, convertibles, and equity compensation.
    • Ensure rigorous documentation, governance, and audit defensibility.

    Project Finance, Tax Equity & Infrastructure Accounting

    • Oversee accounting for project-level entities and assets, including construction-in-progress (CIP), capitalization policies, depreciation, impairment, and asset retirement obligations.
    • Manage accounting for tax equity structures, including partnership flip and other tax equity arrangements, allocation of income, losses, and tax attributes, and ITC and other incentive-related accounting where applicable.
    • Support project financing transactions, including debt facilities, securitizations, and non-recourse structures.
    • Collaborate closely with project finance, FP&A, legal, and operations teams.
    • Work effectively with international teams and collaborate across borders and cultures.

    Team, Systems & Process Leadership

    • Build, lead, and mentor a high-performing accounting team.
    • Own accounting systems, ERP, and reporting tools (NetSuite experience a plus).
    • Drive process automation and scalability as the company grows.
    • Establish best-in-class policies, procedures, and controls aligned with public-company standards.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Skills & Experience

    • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience.
    • Controller experience at a public company or direct IPO experience.
    • Deep expertise in U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls.
    • Demonstrated experience with project finance and tax equity accounting.
    • Strong leadership skills with the ability to own and scale a function end-to-end.
    • Comfort operating in a fast-paced, capital-intensive environment.
    • Background in energy storage, renewables, infrastructure, utilities, or power markets.
    • Big 4 or national firm experience (audit or accounting advisory).
    • Experience with long-lived assets, complex revenue recognition, and structured finance.
    • ERP implementation, integration, or optimization experience (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, etc.).
    • Prior experience working closely with boards, investors, and audit committees.

    Education

    • Bachelor’s degree in finance.
    • CPA required.

    LOCATION

    The company is in the process of consolidating headquarters and operations in the United States, with a senior management team and a significant portion of the finance and accounting organization based in the Boulder–Denver, Colorado corridor. This role will sit in that corridor, with close collaboration across time zones and geographies.

    Ideal Candidate Profile

    A summary of key competencies required to be successful include the following:

    Functional Experience
    • Past controller or Chief Accounting Officer responsibility of services companies with revenue of $40-150M.
    • Successful history with meeting and exceeding KPI’s and key revenue metrics for organizations.
    • Passion for and prior history of creating high performing teams.
    Industry Experience
    • Renewable energy storage sector, specifically developing long-duration energy storage (LDES) solutions, or similar utilities infrastructure sectors.
    Corporate Stage
    • Builder/optimizer leader.
    • Experience at a company with at least 100+ employees.
    • $40-150M+ company revenue experience.
    Management and Leadership Experience
    • Experience working with Venture Capital or Private Equity.
    • Experience building and leading finance/accounting teams.

    Compensation

    Compensation is competitive with the position’s requirements. In a performance-based environment, this will include base salary, bonus/commission structure based on individual and corporate qualitative and quantitative strategic KPIs, and performance stock option plan.
