Top Trends in 2015 for Executive Talent
Wrapping up 2015 and diving into Q1 2016 has no doubt left us all a bit breathless.  Driving through the holidays, year-end closes, and a hairpin-curved descent down a stock market decline has us more often focused on the potential potholes immediately in front of us than on the destination and horizon line that are the real mission in each of our businesses.

Our mission here at BSG? To communicate to our executive ecosystem with knowledge, insights, and news on leadership & the executive hiring marketplace.  Here’s our latest effort at periodic mash-up of that and then some.

Tech/Sciences practice areas: What were the “hot functions” in 2015? If our firm was any indication, several functions were key:
    By Sector/specialty:

    • Software & related
      • What was  “in”:
        • Cloud, big data, analytics
        • SaaS
        • mobile
        • Healthcare
        • security
      • What was “out”:
        • Social
        • Cleantech/energy related
        • “on-premises” client-server software of any kind
    • By functional area
      • “In”
        • Product management
        • UI/UX (user interface, user experience, etc.)
        • Engineering leadership
        • Sales leadership & management with strong metrics driven approach (repeatable, scalable etc.)
        • Chief Financial Officer with FP&A (financial planning & analysis) as particular muscle of interest
      • “Out”
        • Marketing (Chief Marketing Officer)
        • Chief “Revenue” Officer (unless very narrowly and specifically defined)

Pulse of broader executive talent market: 2015 proved really robust for executive search (see prior post on 2015—10 Realities of the Executive Talent Market: the Good & the Bad).

At BSG we saw continued strength in the executive talent markets across the year in key vertical sectors in which we focus, including technology, healthcare, industrials, and education industries. The Association of Executive Search & Leadership Consultants (AESC) confirmed our anecdotal evidence when they reported the first 3 quarters of 2015 saw increased executive hiring activity, up almost 7% over 2014 for North American region.   Sectors seeing the most activity were led by industrials at almost 25% of all searches, financial services at a bit more than 21%, and technology and healthcare at around 15% each. https://www.aesc.org/insights/thought-leadership/aesc-insights/q3-2015-state-industry-report

Are executives more willing to move in 2015?  Deloitte’s Bersin team registered an increase from 25% to 30%, a significant increase and one that indicates that there is more confidence by executives in the business climate.  Note however that it still leaves 70% of the talent market in “passive” mode, not likely to respond to advertising, posting, or other similar methods of recruitment.

In closing: Two closing updates on BSG.  We publish 6 times a year a piece called “Links to Leadership.”  It is a curation of the best articles on leadership, executive hiring, compensation trends and related issues.  Our audience for this are investors and executive operators of privately held, often investor-backed businesses focused on growth.  The latest edition can be found at http://www.bostonsearchgroup.com/blog/links-to-leadership-january-2016-2/.   Make sure you subscribe with your email if you’d like to get future issues.

And, in a brazen moment of self-promotion, here are some of BSG’s latest search completions in the tech, healthcare, and innovation practice areas.

    Here’s to a strong 2016 for all.
