Good read. Although I have taught business planning for twenty years, I came to the realization that a great number of plans had been written, but a much lesser number ever came to fruition - I began to believe that the number of successful entrepreneurian endeavors was inverse to the size of the business plan. All of my clients were micro businesses, however, and were not starting with funding of more than $100k. Not a few started out with no plan and didn't work on one, specifically, until they needed additional funding!

Clark -

You're right on the money and at Babson Dr. Sarasvathy's study appeared several times both as a resource, a catalyst for discussion and a tenant of certain classes.

An example - one component of Professor Bob Caspe's Marketing for Entrepreneurs class forced students to break their prior mental models and embrace the concept of affordable loss and iterative sales pitches. Each student/group marketing their 'product' (or service) had to 'close' a customer without actually having the 'product' developed. I received several 'No's' and a few 'Yes's' - both proved valuable in defining what key characteristics the first 'product' should have.

Babson continues to help teach and practice the entrepreneurial thought and action which is an outgrowth of entrepreneurial DNA. Glad I went there and trying to put it to good use now.

Great post.

Best,

Ajit
